Presentation of the Institut Paul Lambin
The Institut Paul Lambin (IPL) has been part of the Haute Ecole Léonard de Vinci since 1996. It was created in 1949 by the Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL) and is still an associate member of the university. It has been located on the site of the UCL and the Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, in the Brussels district. It has about 800 students.
It offers full-time higher education: bachelors in medical biology, dietetics, medical imaging, chemistry and information technologies. These studies are “occupational”, i.e. with a direct access to the job market.
(Note: the term ‘bachelor’ used on this website refers to the framework of the Bologna process, i.e. three-year courses that are similar to the three-year bachelor’s degree courses in Anglo-Saxon countries, what French people commonly call ‘BAC+3’).
All the courses are organised over three years. The first year is based on fundamental theoretical and practical courses. In the second year, a more specialised, didactic approach is adopted that is linked to the professional world. The third year is devoted to more specific courses, seminars, topical issues, as well as to one or more work experience placements. These placements are organised in university laboratories, hospitals and companies. In each section, students must, on the basis of one of their work experience placements, prepare and publicly defend a dissertation. In the Department of medical imaging work experience placements take place from the first year.
The IPL aims at training young graduates who are highly effective, multipurpose, culturally productive in their field, open-minded, and able to adapt to technologies that constantly evolve. In general they are extremely appreciated on the job market.
In order to achieve this goal, human and material resources have been made available to students; teachers are enthusiastic, dynamic, and available; practical courses, professional and leading-edge material; numerous relationships between the school and the professional world. Moreover, part of the theoretical courses at IPL is given by tutors from UCL or by practitioners from major companies and hospitals.
The IPL takes part in exchange programmes at international level (Erasmus, Socrates, Erasmus Belgica, bourses Léonard de Vinci, etc.).
Historically, the Institute was created in 1949 by Paul Lambin
